The Meaning of your Communication is Its Effect

By Daniel Robin
In communicating with other people, what matters more: what we intend to convey, or the actual response we get? Who is responsible for your communication? The meaning of our communication is not what we think it means. It is based on the response we get from the other person. It is pointless to insist on a meaning that is lost on the listener, especially when the response you get is entirely separate from your intent.
For example, we might intend to pay someone a compliment, and if they take it the wrong way, what can we do about that? Would it make sense to argue that they should just take it as a compliment and chill out? Perhaps a better approach is to notice that for them to receive it, compliments must be delivered differently.
If we become conscious of how we produce responses in other people, we will have additional choices. If we’re triggering an unintended response, understand how it happens. The trigger may be as subtle as tone of voice or a certain facial expression; these non-verbal cues say more than our words. If the relationship is important, let the other person know you want to understand what they are getting from you.
For example, a client of mine, call her Kathy, found herself repeatedly in a conflict with a coworker. She speaks and acts in ways that trigger the other person to get instantly upset and frustrated. This pattern has been going on for quite some time. They are both to the point where they try to avoid each other — a useful coping strategy, but not likely to resolve the conflict.
To start, I suggested that she discover what she does (or doesn’t do) that leads to these strong reactions. My suggestion doesn’t imply that she is doing anything wrong. It’s only about the response she gets: use it as feedback. Once she owns how she influences the interactions, she can decide to either continue doing the same thing (and hope that the coworker or the circumstances change), or she can try something different.
Currently, Kathy’s pattern is an automatic "calibrated loop"— similar to how "dysfunction" patterns get set up in family systems — you say this, and they say that, and you say... and the next thing you know nobody is listening and there’s that all-too-familiar feeling again. So, what we can do is remember our goal, and look for alternative ways to get there. Does it make sense to wait for them to change, to act more cooperatively, to notice how inappropriately they are behaving?
Famous definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Communication, like driving in traffic, is a cooperative system. Kathy can produce an instant reaction in the other person with just a glance. Isn’t it amazing that we have such power to influence others?
Contrary to what you might expect, the person who has the most flexibility in a communication situation will generally have the most control over that situation. How flexible are you? If there’s a behavior you cannot generate — for whatever reason — there’s probably a response you won’t be able to elicit from that other person. And if the meaning of your communication is the response you get, that behavior might be exactly the one you need to produce.
If you’re having a tough time influencing someone in the direction you want to go, trying flexing over to their world and first "meet them where they are" (see previous article). If you’re producing an unintended result, remember your goal, and then get some feedback about how you are getting that result. With that feedback, you can plan out different ways to move with the other person toward your desired outcome.
There’s a saying: when what you’re doing isn’t working, try anything else. When you maintain a state of curiosity, you can try doing something — anything — different, perceive the response, and learn from it. Did you move toward your goal? Ask for feedback. Keep experimenting.

Choice Is Better Than No Choice
I Said , She Said Ibrahim
Apakah Anda bergerak menuju tujuan Anda ? Mintalah umpan balik . terus bereksperimen

The 10 Questions Every Change Agent Must Answer

As leaders, we have no control over how fast markets grow or how wisely banks lend. But we do control our own mindsets and "animal spirits" — the phrase coined by John Maynard Keynes in the depth of the Great Depression. If all you've got is a spreadsheet filled with red ink and dire forecasts, it's easy to be paralyzed by fear and resistant to change. But if you can summon some leadership nerve, then hard times can be a great time to separate yourself from the pack and build advantages for years to come.
Indeed, when it comes to creating the future, the only thing more worrisome than the prospect of too much change may be too little change — especially in an economy where there are too many competitors chasing too few customers with products and services that look too much alike. Now is the time to rethink long-held strategic assumptions inside your company, to challenge decades of conventional wisdom in your industry, and to push yourself to learn, grow, and innovate. As Albert Einstein famously said, "Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them." Or, in the spirit of some unknown Texas genius: "If all you ever do is all you've ever done, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."
It's time to do — and get — something different. Here, then, are ten questions that leaders must ask of themselves and their organizations — questions that speak to the challenges of change at a moment when change is the name of the game. The leaders with the best answers win.
1. Do you see opportunities the competition doesn't see?
IDEO's Tom Kelly likes to quote French novelist Marcel Proust, who famously said, "The real act of discovery consists not in finding new lands but in seeing with new eyes." The most successful companies don't just out-compete their rivals. They redefine the terms of competition by embracing one-of-a-kind ideas in a world of me-too thinking.
2. Do you have new ideas about where to look for new ideas?
One way to look at problems as if you're seeing them for the first time is to look at a wide array of fields for ideas that have been working for a long time. Ideas that are routine in one industry can be revolutionary when they migrate to another industry, especially when they challenge the prevailing assumptions that have come to define so many industries.
3. Are you the most of anything?
You can't be "pretty good" at everything anymore. You have to be the most of something: the most affordable, the most accessible, the most elegant, the most colorful, the most transparent. Companies used to be comfortable in the middle of the road — that's where all the customers were. Today, the middle of the road is the road to ruin. What are you the most of?

4. If your company went out of business tomorrow, who would miss you and why?

I first heard this question from advertising legend Roy Spence, who says he got it from Jim Collins of Good to Great fame. Whatever the original source, the question is as profound as it is simple — and worth taking seriously as a guide to what really matters.
5. Have you figured out how your organization's history can help to shape its future? Psychologist Jerome Bruner has a pithy way to describe what happens when the best of the old informs the search for the new. The essence of creativity, he argues, is "figuring out how to use what you already know in order to go beyond what you already think." The most creative leaders I've met don't disavow the past. They rediscover and reinterpret what's come before as a way to develop a line of sight into what comes next.
6. Can your customers live without you?
If they can, they probably will. The researchers at Gallup have identified a hierarchy of connections between companies and their customers — from confidence to integrity to pride to passion. To test for passion, Gallup asks a simple question: "Can you imagine a world without this product?" One of the make-or-break challenges for change is to become irreplaceable in the eyes of your customers.
7. Do you treat different customers differently?
If your goal is to become indispensable to your customers, then almost by definition you won't appeal to all customers. In a fickle and fast-changing world, one test of how committed a company is to its most important customers is how fearless it is about ignoring customers who aren't central to its mission. Not all customers are created equal.
8. Are you getting the best contributions from the most people?
It may be lonely at the top, but change is not a game best played by loners. These days, the most powerful contributions come from the most unexpected places — the "hidden genius" inside your company, the "collective genius" of customers, suppliers, and other smart people who surround your company. Tapping this genius requires a new leadership mindset — enough ambition to address tough problems, enough humility to know you don't have all the answers.
9. Are you consistent in your commitment to change?
Pundits love to excoriate companies because they don't have the guts to change. In fact, the problem with many organizations is that all they do is change. They lurch from one consulting firm to the next, from the most recent management fad to the newest. If, as a leader, you want to make deep-seated change, then your priorities and practices have to stay consistent in good times and bad.
10. Are you learning as fast as the world is changing?
I first heard this question from strategy guru Gary Hamel, and it may be the most urgent question facing leaders in every field. In a world that never stops changing, great leaders can never stop learning. How do you push yourself as an individual to keep growing and evolving — so that your company can do the same?

Proses Pembuatan Tembok Besar

Detail Tembok Besar

Tembok Besar Dimasa Damai

Success Will Come and Go, But Integrity is Forever

If I could teach only one value to live by, it would be this: Success will come and go, but integrity is forever. Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a second to lose, so never allow yourself to ever do anything that would damage your integrity.
Description: http://blogs-images.forbes.com/amyanderson/files/2012/12/integrity.jpg
We live in a world where integrity isn’t talked about nearly enough. We live in a world where “the end justifies the means” has become an acceptable school of thought for far too many. Sales people overpromise and under deliver, all in the name of making their quota for the month. Applicants exaggerate in job interviews because they desperately need a job. CEOs overstate their projected earnings because they don’t want the board of directors to replace them.  Entrepreneurs overstate their pro formas because they want the highest valuation possible from an investor. Investors understate a company’s value in order to negotiate a lower valuation in a deal. Customer service representatives cover up a mistake they made because they are afraid the client will leave them. Employees call in “sick” because they don’t have any more paid time off when they actually just need to get their Christmas shopping done. The list could go on and on, and in each case the person committing the act of dishonesty told themselves they had a perfectly valid reason why the end result justified their lack of integrity.

It may seem like people can gain power quickly and easily if they are willing to cut corners and act without the constraints of morality. Dishonesty may provide instant gratification in the moment but it will never last. I can think of several examples of people without integrity who are successful and who win without ever getting caught, which creates a false perception of the path to success that one should follow. After all, each person in the examples above could have gained the result they wanted in the moment, but unfortunately, that momentary result comes at an incredibly high price with far reaching consequences.  That person has lost their ability to be trusted as a person of integrity, which is the most valuable quality anyone can have in their life. Profit in dollars or power is temporary, but profit in a network of people who trust you as a person of integrity is forever.
Every one person who trusts you will spread the word of that trust to at least a few of their associates, and word of your character will spread like wildfire. The value of the trust others have in you is far beyond anything that can be measured.  For entrepreneurs it means investors that are willing to trust them with their money. For employees it means a manager or a boss that is willing to trust them with additional responsibility and growth opportunities. For companies it means customers that trust giving them more and more business. For you it means having an army of people that are willing to go the extra mile to help you because they know that recommending you to others will never bring damage to their own reputation of integrity. Yes, the value of the trust others have in you goes beyond anything that can be measured because it brings along with it limitless opportunities and endless possibilities.
Contrast that with the person who cannot be trusted as a person of integrity.  Warren Buffet, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway said it best:, “In looking for people to hire, look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy.  And if they don’t have the first one, the other two will kill you.”  A person’s dishonesty will eventually catch up to them. It may not be today, and it may not be for many years, but you can rest assured that at some point there will always be a reckoning.
A word of advice to those who are striving for a reputation of integrity: Avoid those who are not trustworthy. Do not do business with them. Do not associate with them. Do not make excuses for them.  Do not allow yourself to get enticed into believing that “while they may be dishonest with others, they would never be dishonest with me.” If someone is dishonest in any aspect of his life you can be guaranteed that he will be dishonest in many aspects of his life. You cannot dismiss even those little acts of dishonesty, such as the person who takes two newspapers from the stand when they paid for only one. After all, if a person cannot be trusted in the simplest matters of honesty then how can they possibly be trusted to uphold lengthy and complex business contracts?
It is important to realize that others pay attention to those you have chosen to associate with, and they will inevitably judge your character by the character of your friends. Why is that?  It is best explained by a quote my father often says when he is reminding me to be careful of the company I am keeping:  “When you lie down with dogs you get fleas.” Inevitably we become more and more like the people we surround ourselves with day to day. If we surround ourselves with people who are dishonest and willing to cut corners to get ahead, then we’ll surely find ourselves following a pattern of first enduring their behavior, then accepting their behavior, and finally adopting their behavior. If you want to build a reputation as a person of integrity then surround yourself with people of integrity.
There is a plaque on the wall of my office which reads: “Do what is right, let the consequence follow.” It serves as a daily reminder that success will indeed come and go, but integrity is forever.

Pentingnya Values

Dr. HC Ary Ginanjar Agustian – Corporete Culture Consultant

Sifat pekerjaan - Apakah merangsang mental sehari- hari ?

12 Elemen Besar Managing ( Dalam mendapatkan terlibat karyawan )

Integrity. The foundation of success.

I believe that there is nothing more important to success than a strong commitment to integrity.

What is integrity exactly?

Everyone seems to have a different answer. It makes sense though, because integrity is a little different in it's meaning to each person because what each person has integrity to in life never generally is exactly the same.

Dictionary.com defines Integrity as the following.
  • Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.
  • The state of being whole, entire, or undiminished.
  • A sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition.
My favorite personal definition of Integrity is taken and modified from a quote I read of Gandhi’s that related to happiness. “Integrity is when what you say, think and do are in harmony.”

Jesus Christ spoke of integrity as beginning at the thought. Sin is basically a breakdown of integrity to God’s law. Jesus stated that to sin was not only to perform the action, but it was also to even think the sin. Integrity begins with discipline of thought. If you can control the thought, you can control the action.

Why is integrity important?

Because it works! Think about this. You set a goal in business. If you have integrity to that goal, you follow through, you think the goal, you talk about your goal, and then you act on your goal, what happens? The answer is simple; you are successful in your goal. You will also find that as time progresses you won't only just be successful with your goal, but you will find success in many other areas. Practicing Integrity is like the sun touching on darkness in every area of your life. People believe you; they believe in you, they trust you and they listen to you. They begin to respect you, have faith in you and they know that your word correlates to a result.

Let's play a quick game.

I was at a luncheon recently and I listened to a motivational speaker. He had the audience participate in an exercise. I enjoyed the exercise and the result of it, so I would like to share it in this article. I modified the exercise a little to fit this article.

Get out something to write with. Take a few moments to look back at the people who have most positively impacted or changed your life. People like a mentor, a teacher, a coach, a hero, a parent, or a friend. When you think about those people, write down the things about them that positively impacted you, the things that you remember most about them and all the things that made you feel the way you felt about them. Now once you have written those things down, take a look at what you have written. Mark each one of those things as either a character trait or as a skill. Take a few moments to tally up everything. Most people will notice that the majority of those things you wrote down are related to those people's character. Notice that only a few of the things relate to a person’s skills. Notice that their greatness is not attributed to their skills, their car, their house, but it is in their character. Now again think about what you wrote down about the people you have respected so much. What do people see in your character? What do you want them to see? How can those thoughts become your integrity, what will you think, say and do?

In Closing.

You will achieve success when you have a clear vision of what you want. Apply integrity to that clear vision. What will you say, think and do towards? What will you apply your integrity towards? Clearly define that and think about it, talk about it and act on it.

Integrity takes a lot of work and it is not the easy route. However, Integrity is like paying cash versus paying with credit. Integrity holds no principal and no interest, no fines, no fees, no hidden surprises, no strings attached and it offers a perfect credit score. It takes more up front but it is like money in the bank, and it will pay out interest.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this. I hope you enjoyed it. Also, If you want to continue reading I also included a quick little article on integrity that I enjoyed by Anthony Robinson.
  1. What you see is what you get. Outer and inner are connected, parts of one whole.
  2. A person who has basic integrity honors commitments and keeps promises. If they say they will be there, they are. If they promise to do something, they do it.
  3. A person with integrity is truthful. You can trust what they tell you.
  4. Consistency. Someone who has integrity isn't your new best friend one week and then next week doesn't seem to know you.
  5. Integrity doesn't mean that a person never makes mistakes. But a person with integrity accepts responsibility for his or her own mistakes or failures and does what's in his or her power to put things right.
  6. People with Integrity are slow to blame others for their problems or frustrations. They are not whiners.
  7. People of integrity care about the work, the mission, or the product and about a job well done, and not just about what they personally will get out of it in terms of money, recognition, or advancement.
  8. While receptive to learning and change, people of integrity are skeptical of simple answers to complex problems, and not inclined toward fads or buzzwords.
  9. A person of integrity minds his or her own business. I don't mean isolation. I mean paying attention to your own responsibilities and work rather than freely inserting yourself into the responsibilities of another.
  10. People of integrity know that they are not perfect and that sometimes in this life it is not possible to avoid disappointing or hurting others. Because of this they are able to forgive and recognize their own need for forgiveness
